When we set out in early 2015 to design a shell caddy system for slugs, buckshot and high-brass loads, we were focused on a
mindset-specific approach to running mixed loads with shotgun. In much the same way that many shooters keep their pistol
and rifle mags in the same location throughout a match, we always keep specialty loads in the same location and load
with the hand opposite that used for birdshot.
We have long subscribed to the theory that different loads from different locations helps keep
a mental separation when going from bird shot to slugs.
We intended to create a few 'slug tuned' caddies for our own use in twins/quad training and leave it at that. Early into
R&D, we decided that while existing shell holders were great at holding on to shells through a combat obstacle course, these
same caddies made the shells difficult to remove without creating a mess of their position in your hand.
Overly tensioned caddy brackets were especially
problematic with the hand not usually tasked with shotgun loading. Many caddies required you to choose left/right handed
use and assemble them justly, making loading style comparisions difficult to make quickly. The majority didn't retain
high-base shells the same as low-base shells and had to be adjusted for each type. Some required the shell
be pulled as much as 6 shell's width in the wrong direction before being directed toward the loading port.
Why design a caddy that is specific for use with slugs and buckshot?
After using our prototypes
in numerous matches with a wide selection of shell types, we realized the tighter tolerances of many premium
shells (slugs, buckshot, high-brass, pheasant, turkey) would lend themselves to our premium caddy's innovative
retention method. The brackets were machined from an aluminum alloy, a more stable, yet expensive
alternative to the plastic options on the market. It wasn't going to be cheap, but the shells we wanted to hold
weren't cheap either. We also wanted to be able to have a variety of configuration options within the same set of parts.
We set out to make something a bit more standardized that could take advantage of the one feature shared by
premium shells such as slugs and buckshot... Hull consistency.
Take a few of your typical bulk birshot hulls and give them a squeeze. Now, do the same with a quality slug, high-brass
or pheasant load. The quality of the hull is the key to proper shell retention with our system as the bracket
itself doesn't flex. The SHELL does. The small amount of flex in each hull is what provides the retention.
As you can see, the basic bracket design we settled on was both simple and modular. It was also anodized
6061 aluminum and built like a tank. Best of all, the shells only had
to move a fraction of the width away from your body before they could be directed toward your loading port.
Our latest revision is a lighter, skeletonized Competition version that is compatible with Tek Lok,
ELS and other newer mounting systems.
Each configuration of the skeletonized, Competition caddy (without mount) weighs
less than the actual weight of the shot shells it can hold! The basic 6-Shell version weighs under 7 Ounces!
Remember,
the entire structure of the caddy is anodized 6061 T6 alloy, NOT plastic.
While our shell caddies aren't designed for everyone and every shell type, they ARE
designed for a perfect retention compromise with the slugs and high base specialty loads popular to 3-Gun. They also do
a great job of retaining high quality bird shot loads as well.
Bulk bird shot
hulls tend to vary widely in tolerance and are usually plentiful enough on your belt to leave a few behind in the grass
on each stage. This is one of the reasons we didn't design our caddies with those shells in mind. If we had, we would have
been forced to use the same loose tolerances and a flexible material to accommodate them all. We don't expect anyone to
replace what works for their birdshot with our caddies. Instead, we hope you'll try a premium caddy with your premium shells
to see what we're all about.
Most importantly, our caddies are modular and can be configured for widely spaced twins loading (6-shells),
standard quad loading (8-shells) or tightly spaced twins loading (10-shells). They can even be stretched to
accommodate 12-shell layouts by utilizing only one screw on each end bracket, which is trapped in position by squaring it
up to a neighboring bracket.
So, what makes our caddies different? Rather than depending on flexibility in a plastic shell bracket to provide
retention, the caddy is solid CNC machined alloy and relies on flexibility of the shell hull itself for release.
With less tolerance stacking, the release is more uniform and the retention can be lighter.
While they will perform the task of holding onto your shells, it won't be for dear life. While most polymer caddies
require 6-8 lbs of pull to release the shells, ours release with about 3 lbs of pull with their intended shells.
There are no bendable spring loaded catches, temperature sensitive composite clips, or non-intuitive release techniques
involved.
These are simple, yet
rock-solid, premium shell holders. You can run with them and not lose shells, but you can't body check a stage prop or throw
yourself prone on the ground without expecting to lose one or two. The holders will however, release your shells with
a simple grab, every time. This is a tremendous benefit to new quad/twins loaders or those running slugs/buck from their
weak side. That seems like a fair compromise, right?
Do we expect you to fill your belt with these? No. Keep using those cheap caddies to carry your cheap bird shot.
But, for the $1 per round specialty shells, keep them in something that lets you have them back when you want them!
All caddies
ship complete with a backing plate, brackets for shells and
appropriate bracket screws. For customer convenience, we hope to soon have Tek Lok and ELS mounts stocked
to order with your caddy.
Don't know where to start with your order?
As our shell brackets are modular, they can be spaced
initially to test twins, quad or tight twins methods. If you decide quads or tight twins works for you, simply order
additional bracket sets to complete your initial caddy choice. Use of different heights of brackets can also help you
adjust the caddies to accommodate different reach angles. Ordering a variety will give you more placement options.
Rest assured, our modular
concept and alloy bracket design will remain throughout our line. You can purchase with confidence, knowing that you will
be able to use existing parts to reconfigure your set with any new backing plates or brackets we come up with.
Due to the maze of ITAR and export regulations on firearm parts, ours are not currently for sale
outside of the United States. We are in the process of working through these issues with potential
distributors and will update this section with links once we have done so.
